Chichibu Night Festival - December 2nd-3rd

Getting There

Chichibu City Hall Plaza

Getting to Chichibu from Ikebukuro, Tokyo: Direct Red Arrow limited express trains take about 80 minutes to get from Ikebukuro Station to Seibu Chichibu Station. Please make sure to reserve your seat on the train.

The festival floats spend some time in their neighborhoods of origin before converging as they are pulled through the streets towards City Hall. The floats line up on the slope of City Hall Plaza.

History

The festival has been a tradition for at least 300 years and is associated with Chichibu Shrine which has an even more ancient history. The festival floats are assembled without using any nails so even this technique has a feel of authentic history to it.

The festival is recognized as an important cultural property by the Japanese government. In 2016, UNESCO recognized it as one Japan's intangible heritage events.
