Getting There

The historical center of this festival is Kushida Shrine. The time trial race participants represent seven areas of the Hakata District of Fukuoka City and there is a lot of activity in Hakata during the festival.

Kushida Shrine is located near Reisen Park. The nearest stations are Nakasukawabata and Gion on the subway line. Both of these stations are about eight minutes away from the shrine on foot.

Note from a Former Fukuoka Resident

Ben is a Video Games Writer from England. He lived in Fukuoka for five years.

"There's something magical about the final day of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, when the whole of Fukuoka turns out in the early hours of the morning to cheer on the shrine-carrying participants as they race through the streets.

Created to honour a priest who supposedly cured an epidemic in 1241, the festival has an electric, cup-final atmosphere, and standing amid the roaring, water-throwing crowd you truly feel like part of the city.
