History of the Aomori Nebuta Floats & Festival

There are some similarities between the Nebuta Festival and other summer tanabata events in Northern Japan.

There are elements of tanabata festival customs found in China and traditions from the Tsugaru Region in present day Aomori Prefecture found in the Nebuta Festival. The lanterns made with a combination of paper, bamboo and candles have evolved through the years.

The lantern floats which parade these days have become highly elaborate in their design and safer because of the lightbulbs and wire frames which have replaced the candles and bamboo.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1980.
