The festival has humble beginnings. Back in 1950, local middle school and high school students made six impressive snow sculptures in Odori Park. The event snowballed from there with massive attendances and more and more organizations and participants keen on taking part.
The sculptures soon had carnivals, exhibitions and occasional snowball fights surrounding them. By the end of the 1950s and increasing newspaper coverage the event was bringing in tourists from all over Japan.
Sapporo City did great work in including Sister Cities in Canada, Poland, China, Australia and elsewhere in all of the fun and gradually extending the length of the festival itself.
